Heat Stress

Protect yourself!
When the body is unable to cool itself by sweating several heat-included illnesses such as heat stress or heat exhaustion and the more severe heat stroke can occur and result in death.
Factors leading to Heat Stress
High temperature and humidity; direct sun or heat; limited air movement; physical exertion; poor physical condition; some medicines; and inadequate tolerance for hot workplaces. All workers must have their heat/cold stress cards while working.

Symptoms of Heat Stroke
*Headaches, dizziness, lightheaded or fainting
*Weakness and moist skin
*Mood changes (irritability, confusion)
*Upset stomach or vomiting

Preventing Heat Stress
*Know the signs / symptoms
*Be mindful of your coworkers
*Block out direct sunlight
*Use cooling fans/cooling sources.
*Wear lightweight clothing, light colors, loose fitting clothes
*Avoid alcohol and caffeine

What to do for heat related illness
*Call 911 at once
*While waiting for help move the worker to a cool or shaded area
*Loosen or remove heavy clothing
*Provide cool drinking water
*Fan and mist the person with water
